Logic Problem Answers

At this year's NCAA Swimming Championships: five collegians that had graduated from the same high school competed in the meet. Each swam a different event (individual medley, backstroke, breaststroke, sprints, or distance freestyle) and each attended a different college (Gal, Stanford, USC, Long Beach, or Iowa). Two of the five placed first in their events, one placed second, and the other two placed third. From the given clues, determine each swimmer s full name, his event, his college, his class, and how he placed.

  1. James, whose last name is not Wood, is a sophomore.
  2. The distance freestyler and the man from Stanford are Juniors.
  3. The only senior in the group took a 3rd place.
  4. Both the Long Beach student, who is not the backstroker, and the man who competed in the sprints finished behind others in their events.
  5. Fowler does not attend Gal.
  6. Mike, who won a gold medal, and the man from Iowa, who won a bronze, both said they had tried out for the 1984 Olympic Team.
  7. Kroesche, whose first name is not James, did not go to the Olympic Trials.
  8. James is a business major; both DeWitt, who swims breaststroke, and Elleman are math majors.
  9. Kurt, who won a silver medal, hopes to win next year's championship in his event.
  10. Doug realizes this year's meet was his last chance, since he is graduating in the spring.
  11. The backstroker placed second in his event.
  12. Matt, whose last name is not Elleman, attends Iowa.
  13. Cal had a swimmer who won a gold medal.
  14. The sprinter is a freshman.
