Algebra Problem 24
Shooting Contest

A coordinate plane is drawn on a piece of plywood and used as a rifle target (as shown below).  A shot hitting the origin of the coordinate plane (0,0) is a perfect shot.

  • Contestant #1 had shots at (4,5), (8,-2), (6,1), and (-2,-4).

  • Contestant #2 had shots at (-5,-7), (-3,5), (8,-4) and (0,8).

The winner is the contestant whose “average shot” is closest to the origin.

Use the grid below to plot the shots made by each contestant.  Then determine the average of the distances from the center of the grid. Based on the average distance, declare the winner.
